Rivers— wild, running and free, shaping the countryside with a slow moving, meandering knife, have long been domesticated, broken and yoked to the plow of humanity. Where their courses have been judged detrimental to land values or aesthetics, they are quite literally boxed up and moved away. Woe to all of us when the rivers rise against their masters in a riparian slave revolt.
